Welcome, Nick from Goats On The Road! I want to thank him for taking the time to respond to my questions so I can highlight him in the 2019 A to Z Challenge.
The first time my partner Dariece and I visited Mexico, we did what so many Canadians do, we went on an all-inclusive vacation. But we felt so separate from the local people and we really wanted to learn about the culture, the cuisine and the customs of the country, which you simply can’t do from behind resort walls.
So we returned again to actually explore the country independently and we fell in love with it. We’ve since returned five times and spent more than a year in Mexico in total!
I was wondering why you named your blog Goats On The Road?
We always saw goats walking on the road when we first started traveling, and then we started calling each other “goat” as kind of a pet name. Then when we started the blog, we figured, we’re goats, we’re always on the road…so let’s call it Goats On The Road!
What area of Mexico and topics does your blog primarily focus on?
Our Mexican blog posts cover all sorts of places in Mexico! We talk about cool things to do that aren’t normally on the tourism radar, and a lot about Mexican cuisine which is one of the best in the world.
Why do you blog?
We blog because we love to share our travel experiences with the world and show people that there’s more to travel than just staying in closed hotels. Our blog aims to show people how to save money for travel, and how to make money while you’re traveling so that you can quit the 9-5 and live a freer life.
What is your favorite blog post?
Our favorite blog post is probably our post on How To Make Money Online, just because it’s so in depth and gives people so many options to make money while traveling.
What has been the most difficult for you to blog about?
I find it quite difficult to blog about specific cultural activities and customs because I worry that I will word it in a way that doesn’t properly describe its importance to the people of the country.
What has been the best experience you’ve had in Mexico?
I really loved the street food tour in Mexico City! Mainly because we met some amazing people in the market, tasted some great food and had a blast!
What has been the worst experience you’ve had in Mexico?
We really didn’t enjoy Manzanillo. While we were there, there were multiple homicides because of the busy port there and neighboring cartel going to war over who owns it. We also just thought that Manzanillo lacked the amazing Mexican vibe that you feel elsewhere in the country.
What advice do you have for those planning to move or travel to Mexico?
Get out of the resort! Go and explore on your own. Meet Mexican people, taste the food, learn about the culture. It’s truly one of the most fascinating places on Earth, but you haven’t really been to Mexico if you’ve only been in a resort.
Do you plan on returning to Mexico?
Yes, of course, we will return! For one, my dad retired there, plus we have lots of friends there and also we just love the country so much.
Where do you see your blog going?
We aim to teach people how to start their own travel blogs and grow it to become a money-making, travel-supporting dream job. We already have a Free Blogging Course for new bloggers.
